Hail, Highway 106 and a Town That Keeps Growing

Tea had 5,598 people in the 2020 census and about 7,699 by the Census Bureau's 2024 estimate. That's a lot of new driveways, a lot of new SUVs with cameras in the glass, and a lot of trips down Highway 106 to the Tea exit. Here's what lands on our calendar from Tea.

After a Hailstorm, Call Early

When hail rolls across Lincoln County, the whole metro calls us the same morning. Hail weeks can run around 40 windshields, and the calendar fills from the first call.

Snap a photo of the damage, grab your policy number and call before lunch. If the crack is outside your line of sight, you can usually drive it a few days while the glass ships. Put a strip of clear tape over any chip tonight.

How Much Does Windshield Replacement Cost in Tea?

Windshield replacement in Tea runs about $280 to $550 on a car without a camera and about $650 to $1,400 when the camera needs calibrating. A blemished windshield costs $145 plus tax installed where one fits. Driving to Tea costs you nothing extra, and with comprehensive coverage most Tea drivers pay just the deductible.

Tea jobWhat it involvesTypical 2026 cost
Hail crack, older sedanNew glass, no sensors$280 to $450
Hail crack, newer SUVNew glass + rain sensor + camera calibration$750 to $1,300
Chip from the Tea exit rampResin fill, about 20 minutes$60 to $120, often $0 with insurance
Short crack under 6 inchesResin fill if it misses the edge$90 to $150
Pickup windshield, no cameraFresh urethane, new molding$320 to $520

Every price is confirmed from your VIN before we order glass. Your VIN spells out the options, like a rain sensor, which switches the wipers on for you, or an acoustic windshield with a quieter, sound-soaking layer. Any one of those means a different part.

Types of Auto Glass Work We Do in Tea

Hail-Damaged Windshields

Quarter-size hail fell right over Tea on May 17, 2026, according to StormerSite's report log, and a storm like that leaves a mix of bullseyes and long cracks. A crack that reaches the edge, called an edge crack, almost always means new glass because it keeps spreading. We'll tell you straight which ones we can save.

OEM or OEE Glass for Your Car

OEM glass comes from the carmaker's own supplier and wears the car's logo. OEE glass is built to the same federal rule, FMVSS 205, without the logo, and usually costs less. It's like a name-brand bowling ball against a house ball drilled to your fingers. Fit right, both strike. Some cameras like OEM better, and we'll flag that.

Windshield Replacement in Tea for Camera-Equipped SUVs

Most of the newer crossovers parked in Tea driveways have a forward-facing camera behind the mirror. After new glass, we aim it again. Sometimes that's a static calibration, where the camera looks at target boards set up in our shop. Sometimes it's a dynamic calibration, a test drive around the I-229 loop with a computer hooked to the car.

Crack Repair for Short Breaks

A half-moon chip or a combination break (a round chip with short legs) can usually be filled if a dollar bill covers it. Good news: insurers tend to cover that rock chip repair at 100%, since it's cheaper for them than new glass.

What I-29 and 85th Street Do to Glass in Tea

Gravel From the 85th Street Interchange Build

Sioux Falls and SDDOT are building a $54.5 million diverging diamond at 85th Street and I-29 to reach Tea city limits, with completion listed for the end of 2027, per the city's construction page. Until then, dirt and rock trucks share the road with your commute. Most weeks this fall we've fixed a couple of Tea chips that started there.

Highway 106 and the Tea Exit

SDDOT rebuilt the Exit 73 ramps in 2021, and the city redid the 1.4 miles of Highway 106 out to Heritage Parkway after that. The pavement's better now. The gravel section roads just past town haven't changed a bit.

Shop Drop-Off From Tea or a Visit at Home

A lot of Tea folks drop the car at our heated shop on the way into Sioux Falls, ride on to work with a coworker, then pick it up after the safe drive-away time (the wait the glue maker sets before you drive, usually about an hour). Others want the van at home. Either one costs the same.

On cold or windy days the shop wins, period. Next up the chain, we also cover Harrisburg, a short drive east of Tea.

Tea Windshield FAQs

Should I file a hail claim for one cracked windshield in Tea?

Usually yes, if you carry comprehensive coverage. Glass damage from hail falls under it, minus your deductible. Check whether your policy has full glass coverage, an add-on that drops the deductible for glass, because then a new windshield may cost you nothing. We can call the insurer with you.

How long does a windshield replacement take for a Tea driver?

About an hour to set the glass, then the urethane needs its drive-away time, which is often another 30 to 60 minutes. If your car needs camera calibration, plan on two to three hours total. Most Tea drivers who drop the car off on the way to work have it back by lunch.

Can you come to Tea Area High School or my job site?

We can work in most parking lots if the owner allows it and there's room to open both front doors wide. We need dry glass and about 20°F or warmer. Give us the lot, the row and a description of the car, and we'll text you when the van is close.

Is OEE glass legal on my windshield in South Dakota?

Yes. Every windshield sold in the US must meet FMVSS 205 and carry an AS1 marking, a little stamp near the bottom corner showing the glass is approved as a windshield. OEE glass meets that rule. What matters more is the install: clean frame, primer, fresh urethane and a proper cure time.

Do you charge extra to drive out to Tea?

No. Tea sits inside our normal mobile area, so a visit to your driveway costs the same as bringing the car to our shop. The only thing that changes is the weather call. If it's below about 20°F, wet or windy, we'll ask you to bring it in.

What our customers say

  • Rock chip repair
A gravel truck on I-29 put a star chip right in front of me. They fixed it in my work parking lot on my lunch break and insurance paid the whole thing. You honestly can't see where it was.
    Megan T.Southwest Sioux Falls
  • Windshield + ADAS calibration
New windshield on our Highlander, and they did the camera calibration right after. Lane assist works like it did from the factory. They called my insurance with me on the line, so it took ten minutes.
    Brian H.Brandon
  • Back glass replacement
Somebody broke my back window over the weekend. Called Monday morning, it was in by Monday afternoon and they vacuumed every last bit of glass out of the seats.
    Alyssa R.Tea
  • Windshield replacement
It was 6 degrees, so they told me to bring the truck to the shop instead of doing it in my driveway. Glad they did. No leaks, no wind noise, fair price.
