Hartford Glass Damage Starts on I-90

Hartford sits right on I-90, with Exit 387 on the west side and Exit 390 at Highway 38 on the east. Every morning a good share of the town points its cars at Sioux Falls behind semis and gravel haulers. The town grew from 2,534 people in 2010 to 3,354 in the 2020 census, so the line of commuters only gets longer.

Farm Tip: Measure Before You Call

Flat cab glass on an older tractor or skid loader usually gets cut from a pattern. If the old piece is still in one chunk, we can trace it.

If it's in pieces, measure the opening edge to edge and send a photo with a tape measure in it. That saves a trip and gets the glass cut sooner.

Glass Trouble on I-90 West of Sioux Falls

From Exit 390 it's about 6 miles of interstate to the I-29 junction, by the exit numbers in the AARoads I-90 guide. Short drive. But it's a busy six miles.

Semis and Gravel Haulers Between Exit 387 and Exit 396

That stretch carries trucks headed for quarries, feed yards and the industrial parks off Marion Road. A rock that leaves a dual tire at 75 mph doesn't need to be big. SDDOT's Exit 387 ramp project at Hartford ran into 2026, too, with loose shoulders through the work zone. Last summer about half our Hartford calls were chips from that stretch.

Gravel Section Roads Around Hartford

Head a mile off Highway 38 and you're on gravel. The West Central school buses run those roads, and so does every pickup going to the field. Gravel pits the glass a little at a time, and the pits catch low sun and glare. Eventually one becomes a chip.

Types of Auto Glass Work We Do in Hartford

Windshield Replacement in Hartford for Daily Drivers

For a car or crossover, we remove the old glass, scrape the old glue down to a thin even layer, put primer on any scratched metal and lay new urethane adhesive. The safe drive-away time, the wait the glue maker requires before you drive, is usually about an hour.

Pickup Windshields

Half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks take the most rock in Hartford. Most use OEE glass, made to the same federal safety rule without the truck maker's logo, and it fits fine. We'll match the tint band and sensor bracket from the VIN.

Tractor, Combine and Skid Loader Glass

A lot of equipment glass is custom cut glass, flat laminated or tempered sheet cut from a pattern. Some cabs hold the glass in a gasket set, a thick rubber frame the glass snaps into, instead of glue. We cut and set both.

Chip Repair on Your Own Schedule

A chip fix is resin injection: a small tool called a repair bridge sits on the glass, pulls the air out and pushes clear resin in, then a UV lamp hardens it. About 20 minutes.

Can a Windshield Be Replaced in Hartford in Winter?

Yes, but where depends on the thermometer. Our vans set glass in Hartford when it's dry and about 20°F or warmer. Colder than that, or with wind blowing across open fields, the car comes to our heated shop, about 15 minutes east on I-90, so the urethane cures the way its maker intends.

Urethane is like the oil on a bowling lane. You let it set up before anybody throws, and cold air changes how long that takes. That's the whole reason we'll call a job indoors on a January morning.

How Much Does Windshield Replacement Cost in Hartford?

In Hartford, a windshield for a car or pickup without a camera usually runs $280 to $550, and one with a camera and calibration $650 to $1,400. Tractor and skid loader glass is about $150 to $600 cut and installed. We charge nothing extra to drive out, and insurance often covers everything past the deductible.

Before the Van Pulls Into Your Hartford Yard

Clear the dash, pull the toll tags and parking permits off the glass, and give us a flat spot out of the wind if you've got one (a machine shed works great). We text a two-hour arrival window the day before.

While we're there, ask about new wiper blades or rain repellent treatment, a coating that makes rain bead up and roll off. Further on, we also cover Renner, north of Sioux Falls on Highway 115.

Hartford Windshield FAQs

Can you replace glass on a tractor parked in a Hartford field?

Often, yes. If we can drive the van to the tractor on a dry day, we can usually set door or rear glass right there. Big front glass on newer cabs sometimes needs the shop. Send a photo and the model, and we'll tell you before anybody makes the trip.

Do you come to Hartford for a single rock chip?

We do. Hartford is inside our normal mobile area and there's no trip fee. If you've got a chip or two on more than one vehicle, we'll do them all in one visit, which is easier on your day. Most chips take about 20 minutes each with the resin and the UV lamp.

Is a cracked windshield on a farm truck a ticket in South Dakota?

It can be if the crack significantly blocks the driver's view, under state law, even on a farm plate. A chip off to the side usually isn't a problem for the law, but gravel roads and cold nights spread chips fast, so it's cheaper to fill it now.

How long is the drive between Hartford and your shop?

About 15 minutes on I-90, a bit more if you take Highway 38. You rarely need to make it, because the vans come to Hartford. The shop is for cold or windy days, some camera calibrations, and big equipment glass that needs a flat, heated floor.

What our customers say

  • Rock chip repair
A gravel truck on I-29 put a star chip right in front of me. They fixed it in my work parking lot on my lunch break and insurance paid the whole thing. You honestly can't see where it was.
    Megan T.Southwest Sioux Falls
  • Windshield + ADAS calibration
New windshield on our Highlander, and they did the camera calibration right after. Lane assist works like it did from the factory. They called my insurance with me on the line, so it took ten minutes.

  • Back glass replacement
Somebody broke my back window over the weekend. Called Monday morning, it was in by Monday afternoon and they vacuumed every last bit of glass out of the seats.
    Alyssa R.Tea
  • Windshield replacement
It was 6 degrees, so they told me to bring the truck to the shop instead of doing it in my driveway. Glad they did. No leaks, no wind noise, fair price.
