Auto Glass Calls We Get From Baltic

Here's the thing about Baltic. It sits on the Big Sioux between I-29 and SD 115, and neither one actually goes through town. So nearly every drive starts on 250th Street or a gravel section road, and that's where the glass gets hit. The census had Baltic at 1,089 people in 2010 and 1,246 in 2020, and lots of those newcomers commute to Sioux Falls.

Gravel Road Tip for Baltic Drivers

Most gravel-road chips come from the pickup coming at you, not the one you're following. At 50 mph its tires fire stones right at your windshield.

Meeting traffic on 250th Street? Let off the gas and hug the right edge. It costs you two seconds and saves a chip repair.

What Baltic's Back Roads Do to a Windshield

It's the section-line gravel, mostly. Rural Minnehaha County is a checkerboard of it, and Baltic sits right in the middle of the board. Loose rock, washboard ruts, dust hanging in the air on a dry August afternoon. Last summer about half of our Baltic calls were chips picked up within five miles of town.

Washboard roads and stress cracks

Some cracks show up with no rock at all. That's a stress crack, and it comes from heat, cold or the body twisting. A pickup that spends all fall rattling over washboard, then sits out on a 5-degree night, can grow one from the side overnight. If it starts within about 2 inches of the frame, it's an edge crack, and that pretty much always means new glass.

Dust in the chip

Dust is the other problem. It packs into an open chip in a day or two, and a dirty chip never fills as clear. It's like a slow leak in a pontoon tube: patch it on the dock in ten minutes, or tow the boat home later. Stick a piece of clear tape over a new chip the same day.

What Does Windshield Replacement in Baltic Cost?

Windshield replacement in Baltic runs about $280 to $550 on a vehicle without sensors and $650 to $1,400 when a lane camera needs calibration. Tractor and skid loader glass costs about $150 to $600 cut and installed. Mobile visits to Baltic cost the same as our shop, and your VIN locks in the price.

Types of Auto Glass Work We Do in Baltic

Chips and short cracks

Chips smaller than a quarter and cracks under about 6 inches can usually be filled with resin. We'll tell you on the phone whether it's a fix or a new windshield. Good news: we'd rather fix it. See windshield chip repair.

Pickup and farm truck windshields

A lot of Baltic glass rides on half-tons and three-quarter-tons. We match the part by VIN, including any rain sensor at the mirror (the part that turns the wipers on by themselves), and set it in fresh urethane adhesive, the thick black glue bead that holds it in.

Tractor, skid loader and equipment glass

Cab glass on farm machines is usually flat, so we make custom cut glass from a pattern. A skid loader door often uses polycarbonate or laminated glass, and we check which one yours takes before we cut anything.

Power windows

A window that drops into the door is usually the window regulator, the motor and track that move the glass. We replace just the bad part, and new parts carry a 1-year warranty.

Getting Your Car Fixed From Baltic

You've got two options. The van can come to your yard, your farm shop or the lot at work. Or you drive to us, which is a straight run down I-29 from exit 94.

Our vans need dry glass and roughly 20°F or better. Out on a Baltic farm, we also want a calm day, because one gust of road dust in wet urethane ruins the bond. When it's cold or blowing, we'd rather move you to the heated shop at the same price. If there's room in the machine shed, pull the truck inside and we're usually fine.

Booking is simple. Text a photo and the last six of your VIN, we send a price, and the day before we text a two-hour window. Down the road, we also cover Lennox and the rest of Lincoln County.

Auto Glass in Baltic, SD: FAQs

Can you replace a windshield at a farm outside Baltic?

Sure, as long as we've got a fairly level spot out of the wind and dry glass. A machine shed is perfect. The urethane needs about 20°F or warmer to cure right. When you book, give us the road name and fire number, so our installer pulls into the right yard the first time.

Do you fix tractor and skid loader glass?

We do. Most equipment glass is flat, so we cut it from a pattern of the old piece or the opening. Bring the broken piece if you still have it. Plain side glass can often be cut and set in one visit, while curved or tinted pieces may take a few days to order.

How long does a Baltic windshield job take?

Setting the glass takes about an hour. Then the urethane needs its safe drive-away time, usually 30 to 60 minutes and longer in the cold. If your truck has a lane camera, add time for calibration, which puts the whole visit at two to three hours from start to finish.

Will gravel dust ruin a chip before you get there?

It can make the repair less clear, but it rarely makes it impossible. Tape over the chip right away and skip the car wash until we fill it. Don't blast the defroster on a cold morning either, since sudden heat on cold glass can run a small chip into a long crack.

Happy Customers!

What our customers say

  • Rock chip repair
A gravel truck on I-29 put a star chip right in front of me. They fixed it in my work parking lot on my lunch break and insurance paid the whole thing. You honestly can't see where it was.
    Megan T.Southwest Sioux Falls
  • Windshield + ADAS calibration
New windshield on our Highlander, and they did the camera calibration right after. Lane assist works like it did from the factory. They called my insurance with me on the line, so it took ten minutes.
    Brian H.Brandon
  • Back glass replacement
Somebody broke my back window over the weekend. Called Monday morning, it was in by Monday afternoon and they vacuumed every last bit of glass out of the seats.
    Alyssa R.Tea
  • Windshield replacement
It was 6 degrees, so they told me to bring the truck to the shop instead of doing it in my driveway. Glad they did. No leaks, no wind noise, fair price.
    Doug P.Harrisburg
